Min.length aquarium : 100 cm - 40"
English name : Niger tetra, African Red Eyed Characin
Peaceful schooling fish for a community aquarium.  The aquarium should be planted on the sides and background,  but not too densely.  In the middle you should leave a lot of free swimming space.  The substrate should be dark and the light must be dimmed to bring out the colours of this fish.  Use a peat-filter and make sure that the water is not too hard.  A regular changing of the water is necessary.

You should give them strong live food.  Large flakes of dry food are accepted as well.

Breeding is not very difficult.  The water should be softer and you must feed the females well.  Up to 1000 eggs are laid and fertilized between plants.  After spawning you should remove the parents.  After 30 - 35 hours the eggs hatch.  When the you fishes are swimming free you should feed them with fine infusoria and later with baby brine shrimp.  They grow quickly.  After 2 weeks they are already 4,5 cm (1,5").
