Family : Cichlidae
Origin : Amazon river
Length : 14 cm - 5.5"
Min. length aquarium : 140 cm - 55"
Calm, rather peaceful fish.  Only during breeding times they are rather aggressive to species of their own kind.  Then they dig in the substrate and make a territory.  The aquarium should be set up with well anchored plants, stones and driftwood that make hiding places.  In a large aquarium you can keep several pairs with their own territory.  They regularly spawn.

They are omnivorous.  You should give them a great variety of live, frozen and dry food.

Breeding is easy.  100-300 eggs are laid and fertilized on a previously cleaned substrate.  When the fry is hatched the parents remove the larvae to a breeding pit.  Both parents care for the fry very intensive.  They can raise several nests each year.
