Family : Cichlidae
Origin : Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina
Length : 70 cm-28" (in the aquarium 30 cm-12")
Min. length aquarium : 250 cm - 100"
English name : Chameleon cichlid
You should keep this fish as a couple.  In breeding time he is very aggressive to other species.  The aquarium should be set up with driftwood, roots and stones that form hiding places.  Because they dig a lot in the substrate you cannot use plants for decoration.  Of course you can use floating plants.

You should give them powerful live food.  Dry food is accepted as well.

Breeding is not difficult.  300-1000 eggs are laid and fertilized on a previously cleaned stone.  After hatching the parents move the larvae to a breeding pit.  Both parents care for the fry very intensive for a period of 6-8 weeks.  The young fishes can be raised with baby brine shrimp.
