This sometimes timid fish is peaceful towards other species and a very good fish for the community aquarium together with other peaceful fishes. The aquarium should be well planted on the sides and the background.  Use some floating plants as well to provide areas of shade.  The substrate should be dark to bring out the colours of this fish.  A regular changing of the water is necessary.

The fish is omnivorous.  All kinds of food are accepted.

Breeding is easy.  Up to 500 eggs are laid in a bubblenest.  After spawning the female should be removed because the male will chase her and kill her.  The male takes care of the nest.  After 24 hours the eggs hatch and another day later the young fishes are swimming free.  Now you should remove the male as well.  You can feed the young fishes with small infusoria and sometimes later with baby brine shrimp.
