Origin : South Brazil
Length : 15 cm - 6"
Min. length aquarium : 140 cm - 55"
Peaceful, somewhat reserved fish that defends a small territory.  The aquarium should be set up with stones, driftwood and roots.  Some hard plants can be used for decoration as well.  It is wise to keep this fish at lower temperatures of about 15°C (60°F) during a few months each year.  A powerful filter is necessary.

They are omnivorous.  You should give them a great variety of live, frozen and dry food.

Breeding is not easy.  About 30 eggs are laid and fertilized.   The female cares for the eggs.  After hatching the female takes the eggs in her mouth.  After 10-12 days the young fishes are swimming free.  You can raise them with baby brine shrimp.
