Family : Characidae
Origin : Guyanas, Brazil
Length : 4 cm - 1.5"
Min.length aquarium : 60 cm - 25"
Peaceful schooling fish that can be kept with other small and peaceful fishes.  The aquarium should be planted densely on the sides and background.  In the middle you should leave a lot of free swimming space.  The tank should be set up with a dark substrate, and have the lighting diffused by a cover of floating plants to bring out the colours of the fish.  Use a weak peatfilter.

You should give them small live food.  Frozen and dry food are accepted as well.

Breeding in captivity is very difficult.  The eggs are laid and fertilized between fine leaved plants.  Because the parents eat their own eggs it is wise to use a spawning grid.  After spawning you should remove the parents.  When the young fishes are swimming free you can raise them with very fine infusoria.
