Family : Characidae
Origin : Amazon river
Length : 4 cm - 1.5"
Min.length aquarium : 60 cm - 20"
English name : Royal Tetra
Peaceful schooling fish that can be kept in a community aquarium together with other peaceful fishes.  The aquarium should be planted densely on the sides and background.  In the middle you should leave enough free swimming space.  A dark substrate and a dimmed light by using floating plants bring out the colours of the fish.  A regular changing of the water is recommendable.

You should give them small live food.  Dry food is accepted as well.

Breeding is not difficult.  In a darkened aquarium up to 130 eggs are laid and fertilized between fine leaved plants.  You should use a spawning grid because the parents eat their own eggs.  After spawning the parents should be removed immediately.  After 1-2 days the eggs hatch.  As soon as the young fishes are swimming free you can start feeding with very fine infusoria and a few days later with baby brine shrimp.
