Family : Melanotaeniidae
Origin : New Guinea
Length : 10 cm - 4"
Min. length aquarium : 100 cm - 40"
English name : Irian Jaya Rainbowfish
Lively schooling fish.  During breeding time males get rather aggressive to smaller males.  The aquarium should be planted densely on the sides and background.  In the middle you should leave enough free swimming space.  A dimmed light by using floating plants brings out the colours of the fish.  A good filter and a regular large changing of the water are appreciated.

They are omnivorous.  You should give them a great variety of live, frozen and dry food.

Breeding is easy.  50-150 eggs are laid and fertilized in a period of several days between fine leaved plants.  After about a week the eggs hatch.  When they are swimming free you can raise them with fine crushed dry food.
