Origin : Central America

Min. length aquarium : 140 cm - 55"
You should keep this fish as a pair. They make a rather small territory.   In an aquarium of 140 cm (55") you can keep 3-4 pairs.  In breeding time each couple defends their own small territory.  Young from different parents are adopted and they can move freely between the territories.  The aquarium should be set up with driftwood and stones.  Some well anchored plants can be used as well.

You should give them live food.  It is not wise to use large food, Tubifex , beefhart, and red mosquito larvae.

Breeding is rather easy.  100-300 eggs are laid and fertilized on a stone.  When the eggs are hatched the parents move the larvae to breeding pits.  Both parents care for the fry very intense.  A couple can raise several nests every year.
