This territorial fish needs a large, roomy tank with plenty of open swimming areas.  When the tank is too small they become very aggressive.  He can be kept with other large fish. The aquarium should be setup with a sandy bottom, a lot of driftwood and stones that form caves and hiding places. Some floating plants should be used to diffuse the light.

They are omnivorous.  You should give them a great variety of live and frozen food.  Dry flakes are accepted as well.

Breeding is easy when you have a good matching couple.   The best way to breed them is to  raise a group of 6-8 fish and watch to see them pair off.  At higher temperatures a lot of eggs are laid and fertilized.  Both parents take care of the fry.  When the youngsters are swimming free you can feed them baby brine shrimp and a few days later fine dry food.
