Shy, very aggressive fish that should only be combined with other large, robust species. Smaller fish will be eaten.  The aquarium should be planted with some hard plants.  Floating plants also can be used.  They are renowned for their ability to migrate between ponds over land, so you should use a tight-fitting cover.  A powerful filter and a frequent changing of the water is necessary.

They are omnivorous.  You should give them a great variety of live, frozen and vegetable food.

Breeding is not difficult. Up to 5000 eggs are laid randomly between the plants.  The eggs float and no parental care has been reported, but the fish will not eat the fry. After 24-30 hours they hatch. When the young fishes are swimming free you can feed them with infusoria.
