Family : Osphronemidae
Origin : Borneo, Thailand, Vietnam
Length : 8 cm - 3"
Min. length aquarium : 80 cm - 30"
English names : Banded fighting fish, Borneo Betta, Striped Betta
Peaceful, somewhat shy fish that should be kept as a pair together with other peaceful fishes.  Then they get less shy.  The aquarium should be planted densely because they need hiding places.  A dimmed light and a dark substrate bring out the colours of the fish.  Because they are good jumpers you should cover the aquarium very well.  They are rather sensitive for large changes of water quality.  So it is wise to change very regularly small amounts of water.

They are omnivorous.  You should give them a great variety of live, frozen and dry food.

Breeding is not difficult.  200-300 eggs are laid and fertilized.  Immediately after that the male takes the eggs in his mouth.  The female defends the male and the territory.  After 12 days the young fishes leave the mouth of the male.  You can raise them with baby brine shrimp and fine crushed dry food.
