Peaceful, somewhat shy fish that can be kept together with
other peaceful fishes. They are rather aggressive to
each other, so you should keep them as a pair. The
best way to get a good matching couple is to raise a group
of unrelated juveniles to sexual maturity and allow them to
pair off. The best pair should be chosen and the others
should be removed. The aquarium should be set up with
driftwood, roots and stones and planted densely, because
they need hiding places. A sandy substrate and a
regular changing of the water are necessary. You should give them small live food. Frozen and dry food are accepted as well. Breeding is not easy because you need a good matching couple. Up to 100 eggs are laid and fertilized in a breeding pit. The female cares for the fry and the male defends the territory. After 10 days the young fishes are swimming free. You can feed them with very fine infusoria. After two weeks they can eat baby brine shrimp. They are not easy to grow. |
