Family : Characidae
Origin : Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina
Length : 5 cm  - 2"
Min. length aquarium : 80 cm - 30"
Peaceful schooling fish that is suited for the cooler community aquarium.  This fish is not easy to keep because they don't like high temperatures.  The water should be very clean and have a lot of oxygen.  They need quick moving water by using a very powerful filter.  The aquarium should be planted densely on the sides and background.  In the middle you should leave a lot of free swimming space.  A dimmed light brings out the colours of the fish.

You should give them small live food.

Breeding is not easy.  The eggs are fertilized inside the female.  She can lay eggs several weeks after fertilization.  They are laid preferably under the leaves of plants.  The eggs hatch within one day.  Because the young fishes are very small it is difficult to feed them.  You need very small infusoria.
