Very aggressive, biting fish that should be kept as a pair.
They are not suited for the community aquarium. The
aquarium should be set up with driftwood, roots and stones
that make hiding places. Plants (except some floating
plants) can not be used for decoration because they are
eaten. They are omnivorous. You should give them a great variety of live, frozen and dry food. An important part of the food should be vegetable such as lettuce and spinach. Breeding is very easy. At somewhat higher temperatures the eggs are laid and fertilized on a previously cleaned substrate. Both parents care for the fry very intensive. After 2-3 days the eggs hatch. Another 3-4 days later the young fishes are swimming free. You can raise them with baby brine shrimp and fine crushed dry food. During that period the parents are extremely aggressive to other fishes, so it is wise to let them breed in a separate aquarium. |
