Rather peaceful, somewhat shy fish that you should keep as a
couple. A territory is made. The aquarium should be
set up with driftwood, roots and stones that create hiding
places and caves. On the sides and background you can
use some hard plants for decoration. Only during
breeding times they dig in the substrate. You can keep
them together with other cichlids from Central America (not
C. nigrofasciatum). They are omnivorous. You should give them a great variety if live, frozen and dry food. Breeding is not difficult. Up to 300 eggs are laid and fertilized in a cave. At a temperature of 26°C (79°F) the eggs hatch after 3 days and another 7 days later the young fishes are swimming free. The female generally cares for the fry and the male defends the territory. Sometimes they change that. You can raise the young fishes with baby brine shrimp. |
