Rather shy fish that best can be kept in a special aquarium together with other fishes that are not to small, because they are eaten.  The aquarium should be set up with hard plants and some driftwood, because they need hiding places.  You should use some floating plants too.  A large filter is necessary.

They are omnivorous but they prefer large powerful live food such as small fish, earthworms and insect larvae.  Dry food is accepted as well.

Breeding is in a very large aquarium not difficult.  Up to 20000 eggs are laid and fertilized.  These eggs rise to the water surface and can be gathered there.  At a temperature of 29°C (84°F) the eggs hatch after 24 hours.  Another 48 hours later the young fishes are swimming free.  They eat baby brine shrimp immediately.
