This fish is very intolerant to species of their own kind, so you should keep them as a pair.  The aquarium should be decorated with a lot of rocks and stones that form caves and crevices.  They are monogamous mouthbreeders.  A couple stays together for lifetime. Very clear water is necessary, so you should have a very good filter and you should change the water every week for one third part.

You should give them live food.  You should avoid food with high protein such as mosquito larvae.  They like to eat small algae on the rocks as well.

Breeding is not easy.  Up to 30 eggs are laid and fertilized.  The female takes the eggs in her mouth and she keeps them for the next 10 days.  After that time the male takes the fry in his mouth regularly.  Another 10 days later the young fishes have to care for them selves.
