This fish is very aggressive to species of their own kind.
If you want to keep more then one male it is wise to keep
3-4 males. Then the aggression of the dominant male
can be divided. You should keep several females for
one male as well. The tank should be decorated with a
lot of rocks that form caves and crevices. The substrate
should be sandy because they dive into the sand when they
are disturbed. A strong filter and a regular changing
of the water are recommended.
You should give them live food such as shrimp and Artemia. A part of the food should be vegetable. Frozen and dry food are accepted as well. Breeding is not difficult. The male makes a large crater in the substrate. Up to 100 eggs are laid. Immediately after that the female takes the eggs in her mouth. During that procedure they are fertilized by the male. The female hides between the rocks. 3 weeks later the young fishes leave the mouth of the mother for the first time. The female cares for the fry another 3 weeks. You can raise the young fishes with baby brine shrimp and somewhat later with sifted Cyclops. |
