You should keep this species as a couple. They are
less aggressive than other Geophagus. The
aquarium should be set up with stones, driftwood and roots
that make hiding places. They dig a lot in the
substrate. If you want to use plants for decoration
you have to anchor them very well. A territory is
made. You should give them powerful live food. Beef heart, fishmeat, frozen and dry food are eaten. Breeding is not easy and is only successful with a good matching couple. It is wise to start with a group of young animals and let them pair off. 600-800 eggs are laid and fertilized on a hidden substrate. Both parents care for the fry very intensive. The female cares for the eggs and the male defends the territory. When the young fishes are swimming free you can raise them with baby brine shrimp. |
