Very aggressive and territorial fish.  You should keep them as a pair/  You can keep them in a large aquarium together with other large cichlids.  They bite a lot. The aquarium should be set up with stones, driftwood and roots that make hiding places.  They dig a lot in the substrate and plants only can be used if you anchor them very well.  The substrate should be sandy.  You can use floating plants for decoration as well.

You should give them powerful live food.  Frozen and dry food are accepted as well.

Breeding is easy.  Because they live in brackish water it is wise to add 1-2 teaspoons of sea salt to 10 liters of water.  Up to 1000 eggs are laid and fertilized on a previously cleaned stone.  Both parents care for the fry very fanatic.  They care for them till they are about 3 cm (1.2").  You can raise them with baby brine shrimp and fine crushed dry food.
