Generally rather aggressive fish, not only during breeding
time. You can keep them together with other cichlids,
that are not too small. You should keep them as a
pair. A territory is made. You should set up the
aquarium with driftwood, roots and stones that form hiding
places. Soft plants are eaten and can not be used as a
decoration. You better use some well anchored hard
plants. Because this fish is rather high the aquarium
should be at least 50 cm (20") high. You should give them powerful food. A large part of that food should be vegetable. Breeding is easy when you have a good matching couple. The best way is to raise a group of about 6 unrelated juveniles to sexual maturity and allow them to pair off. The best pair should be chosen for breeding and other pairs should be removed. A large number of eggs are laid and fertilized on a substrate. The eggs hatch after 3 days. Both parents care for the fry. The larvae are brought to a breeding pit or some other hiding place. Depending on temperature the young fishes swim free after 8-10 days. You can raise them with baby brine shrimp and fine crushed dry food. |
