For this shell-dweller you should set up the aquarium with a sandy substrate and a lot of snailshells that can provide hiding places.  Around these shells a territory is made and defended fanatical.  You should keep them together with other cichlids from Lake Tanganyika.

They are omnivorous but they prefer small live food.

Breeding is easy. Up to 30 eggs are laid and fertilized in a shell.  The young fishes can be raised with baby brine shrimp and fine crushed dry food.  They are tolerated a long time in the neighbourhood of the nest.
