| Males of this fish are extremely aggressive to each other,
so it is wise to keep one male together with several
females.  You should not keep them together with other
Melanochromis, because then there is the same aggression and
you have the danger of unwanted crossbreeding.  The
aquarium should be decorated on the sides and background
with a lot of rocks  and stones that form caves and
crevices. In their natural habitat they feed on protozoa between the algae on the rocks. In the aquarium you can give them brine shrimp and vegetable food such as Spirulina. Breeding is rather easy. Up to 30 eggs are laid. Immediately after that the female takes the eggs in her mouth. They are fertilized by the male using the dummy egg method. Then the female retires between the rocks. After 21 days the young fishes leave the mouth of the mother and have to care for them selves. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
