Peaceful schooling fish that you can keep in a community aquarium with other peaceful fishes that need extremely soft and acid water. Because they are very sensitive for nitrate it is necessary to change a large part of the water regularly.  They are sensitive for white spot disease as well.  The aquarium should be planted densely on the sides and background with plants that are used to this extreme water conditions.

You should give them small live food.  Small dry food is accepted as well.

Breeding is not easy.  The water in the breeding aquarium should be extremely soft and acid.  The aquarium should be darkened and it is wise to use a spawning grid because they eat their own eggs.  After spawning the parents should be removed.  After 24 hours the eggs hatch and 4-5 days later the young fishes are swimming free.  The first 3 days you should feed them very fine infusoria such as paramecia and rotifers and later with vinegar eels.  When they are large enough you can give them baby brine shrimp.
