Family : Cichlidae
Origin : Guinea
Length : 12 cm - 5"
Min. length aquarium : 120 cm - 50"
Somewhat shy fish that is rather aggressive to species of their own kind and during breeding times to other species as well.  The aquarium should be large enough and set up with plants, driftwood and roots that create a lot of hiding places and holes.  A territory is made.  Sometimes they dig in the substrate, so plants should be anchored.

You should give them live food primarily.  Don't give them Tubifex.

Breeding is not easy.  Up to 50 eggs are laid in a cave.  The female cares for the eggs and the larvae.  The male defends the territory very fanatic.  After 12 days the young fishes appear for the first time.  From that moment the male cares for the young as well.  They can be raised with baby brine shrimp.
