Family : Characidae
Origin : Ecuador, Costa Rica
Length : 17 cm - 6.7"
Min. length aquarium : 200 cm - 80"
This fish needs a lot of space because he is very territorial.  The aquarium should be planted densely on the sides and background because minor fishes need hiding places.  Clear water with a lot of oxygen is necessary to keep these fishes.  A large part of the water should be changed frequently.

You should give them powerful live food such as insect larvae and small fishes.  Insects such as (death) flies are eaten as well.  Frozen food is accepted and after habituation dry food as well.

Breeding is possible in a large aquarium (> 1000 liters).  The dominant male mates with one or more females.  After spawning the male guards the fry.  When the young fishes are swimming free you can raise them with fine infusoria and later with baby brine shrimp.
