In an aquarium that is large enough you can keep several couples of this fish.  The aquarium should be set up with driftwood, roots and stones, creating hiding places. Some hard, well anchored plants can be used as well.  In breeding time they dig in the substrate.  There are several different populations of this fish.  It is not wise to keep them together in one aquarium because you can get unwanted crossbreeding.

You can feed them with live food that is not too large.  Frozen and dry food are accepted as well.  Please don't give them tubifex and red mosquito larvae.

Breeding is easy.  100 - 300 eggs are laid and fertilized on a substrate.  After 3 days the eggs hatch.  The parents remove the fry to a breeding pit they dug before.  After 3 days the young fishes are swimming free.  Both parents care for the fry.  You can raise the young fishes with baby brine shrimp and fine crushed dry food.  The parents can have several nests every year.
