Family : Cichlidae
Origin : Mexico, Guatemala
Length : 25 cm - 10"
Min. length aquarium : 200 cm - 80"
English name : Two-Striped Cichlid
Very aggressive and intolerant fish, especially during breeding times.  They are aggressive to other species as well.  You can keep them together with other large cichlids and catfish.  The aquarium should be set up with stones, driftwood and roots that create a lot of hiding places.  You cannot use plants because they think it is food.  A territory is made.

You should give them powerful live and frozen food, but the largest part should be vegetable food such as spinach and lettuce.  Dry vegetable food is accepted as well.

Breeding is easy.  Up to 500 eggs are laid and fertilized on a flat stone.  Both parents care for the fry very intensive.  When the eggs hatch the parents move the fry to a breeding pit.  When the young fishes are swimming free you can raise them with baby brine shrimp.
