English name : Amatitlan cichlid
You should keep this cichlid as a pair in a rather large aquarium.  The aquarium should be set up with driftwood, roots and stones that form holes and hiding places.  Because they dig a lot during breeding time it is not wise to use plants for a decoration.  You can use floating plants.  In breeding time they are very intolerant to other fishes.

You should give them powerful live food and for a change with vegetable food such as algae, spinach and lettuce.

Breeding is easy.  Up to 500 eggs are laid and fertilized on a substrate.  After hatching the larvae are brought to a breeding pit they dug before.  The female cares for the fry and the male defends the territory.  When the young fishes are swimming free the male cares for them as well.  You can raise them with baby brine shrimp and fine crushed dry food.
