Family : Cichlidae
Origin : Mexico, Guatemala
Length : 22 cm - 9"
Min. length aquarium : 200 cm - 80"
Rather lively fish that is not very aggressive to other species.  The aquarium should be set up with stones, driftwood and roots that make hiding places.  You should leave enough free swimming space.  Because they eat plants it is not wise to use them for decoration.  Waterquality and temperatures are not very important.

You should give them mostly vegetable food such as spinach and lettuce.  Dry vegetable food is accepted as well.

Breeding is rather easy.  A large number of eggs are laid and fertilized.  Both parents care for the fry very fanatic.  The male defends the territory.  When the eggs are hatched the parents move the fry to a large breeding pit.  After 10 days the young fishes are swimming free.  You can raise them with baby brine shrimp.
