You should keep this fish as a pair.  Especially in breeding time they are very aggressive.  Don't keep them together with smaller fish.  The aquarium should be set up with stones and a lot of driftwood that form caves and hiding places.  Especially in breeding time they dig in de ground so it is better not to use plants except floating plants.

They are omnivorous.  You should give them a great variety of live and frozen food.  This should be supplemented with plant material.

Breeding is rather easy.  Up to 500 eggs are laid and fertilized on a flat substrate.  After hatching the fry will be transported to a pit.  Both parents take care of the fry.  When the young fishes are swimming free you can feed them new born baby brine shrimp and fine dry flakes (vegetable).
